This lighthouse was considered one of the most important in the zone because of the danger of the cape where it is located and the numerous shoals that enclose it, some of which extend to considerable distance from the coast.
Cape Corrubedo configuration is plane and it isn't very elevated over the sea,it forms makes part of the Barbanza peninsula and marks,at the south, the entrance to "Ria Muros-Noya".
The lighthouse was constructed on the most salient and highest point, in a place where to see clearly the lights of the lighthouses " Finisterre and Cíes Islands". The jobs began on May of 1852 and reached an amount of 99,413 pesetas, finishing off in a year. However, its lighting was not made until February the 20th of 1854.
The building, projected by Don Celedonio de Uribe, has the semicircular facade that looks to sea semicircular and rectangular the opposite one; such disposition tries to reduce the effect of storms. The tower, truncated-cone-shaped, begins concentric with the semicircular facade from the interior of the building, supporting the luminous set whose height of focus is located at 14 meters over the land and at 32 meters over the half level of sea.
The optic, with 500 millimetres of focal distance, was acquired to Letourneau company, and joined the lantern were valued in 24,669.85 pesetas. It had a mechanic lamp attended by two lighthouse keepers and it looks like a fixed white light with a range of 15 marine miles. In order to mark the shoals that extended from the point of the cape, it was endowed with one red sector whose was intensity reinforced in 1882.
In spite of the difference of characteristic with the lighthouse of Sálvora, in the practice they were confused and originated some accidents like the merchant ship Sarlier, occurred in the night on December the 7 at 8 of 1896, which lost the life 280 people without no survivor, or the Palermo, one shipwrecked in the night on December the 11 at 12 of 1910 and that cost the lives at 24 people that traveled in it. It gave place in 1912 to a reclamation of the German government answered by the Commission of Lighthouses like follow:
"" 1) That due to Real Orden on July the 15th of 1904,new appearances for the lighthouses of Corrubedo and Sálvora were approved . These would be, respectively, of groups of 3+ 1 white flashes and groups of 3+ 2 flashes with apparatus of 500 millimetres of focal distance, lamp of incandescence of pressured petroleum and 28 or 30 miles of reach.
2) That it will be settled a potent siren in the lighthouse of Corrubedo.
3) That by R.O. on February the 15th of 1906, the shoals of Corrubedo will be marked with white sectors of the same characteristic coming from the lighthouses of Sálvora and Corrubedo.""
These reformations were finished on July the 24th of 1921 with the change of the polygonal lantern by other cylindrical of 3 meters of diameter with turret of iron foundry and a new optic of 500 millimetres of focal distance mounted on pale of mercury, that contains 180 Kg. of this metal, and worked by machine of watchmaking moved by peso motor. In order to mark the shoals it was provided a system of rocking screens Otter that they would produce a white sector of 180º with the characteristic of two and three flashes each 20" and a group of only three flashes of the same color and period in the remainder of the circle in order to indicate the free sector of danger. All the installation was acquired to the French house B.B.T. by 82,500 pesetas gold and a system of incandescence for pressured petroleum of the same supplier for hood of 85 millimetres was also included that, for its wrong result,it would be substituted on April the 26th of 1923 by a lamp Chance Brothers. As an element of emergency was relied on a lamp of constant level and burner of four wicks.
In 1934,due to a petition of the navigators, the characteristic is changed to red color, since the confusions with the lighthouse of the island of Sálvora continued above all in wheather of fog or of storm. The following year it was electrifed endowing of a lamp of 1.500W and two groups electrógens of emergency, remaining the Chance like reservation.
The first intent of installation of siren dates of 1905 with the acquisition of a team of the B.B.T house . In order to compare its results with of the "Islas Sisargas", manufactured by The Fog Signal Company, in 1909 in a provisional hut bordering to the "Torre Hercules" in "La Coruña" it is mounted . Years later, in 1915, a building would be constructed 150 meters from the lighthouse in order to harbor them and that it had also housing for the lighthouse keeper entrusted of it. In spite of it, with the reformation of the lighthouse no longer it was considered necessary and didn't come to settle. Finally, on June of 1970, one of vibrators electromagnétics and group B.B.T motor-convértidor entered in service with group Vendeuvre electrógen of reservation.
A new building, of hexagonal plant and about 40 meters from the lighthouse, was destined to housings of the technicians, was finished on March of 1958. The building of the lighthouse would remain so in order to harbor the machines and apparatuses, remaining the one with the siren, still ramshackle, abandoned. The later , once recovered, is destined at the present time housing to one of the technicians that attend to it.
Included in the "Plan Señales Marítimas" 1985/ 89, its installations are modernized and improved, comforming to the objectives of this.
It will soon be produced a new landmark in the long history of this marine sign with the implantatión of a "Sistema de Supervisión Remota" that will permit the control of its installations and the surverillance of its correct operation to remote distances.
Like a curiosity it should mention the existence of a length of the stairway of snail that gives access the equipament of illumination, in the interior of the tower, carried out in iron and that was elaborated in the foundry of Sargadelos predecessor of the grateful ceramic factory.
