Vilagarcía Port Railway Service started to work in the month of July 1997.
This important service had stated obsolete in the 70’s, reaching a total abandon. This was not acceptable in a general interest port, which should offer this service to its potential customers.
For this reason, one of the main targets of our Port Authority was to bring the railway service back to the Port.
The first movements were carried out in the center of the peninsula, transporting wood pulp.
This service was thought to be used for goods with destination in the center of the peninsula: wood, wood pulp, chickpeas, fish and also for goods for the interior of Galicia such as fertilizers and fodders. At the same time, this service was an important export and import point to other countries.
Accomplished works For a better execution, the works were made in four phases:- Ramal Quay paving and construction of railways. Length: 1.022,75 meters of way or 2.045 meters of rail. Budget: 99.880.000 pesetas.
- Crossroad of the local road C-550. Length: 216 meters of rail or 108 meters of way. Budget: 7.781.072 pesetas.
- Construction of the railway line (from station to crossroad C-550). Length. 450 meters of way. Budget: 13.600.000 pesetas.
- Railway to “Rego de Guillán”. Length: 270 meters of pipeline for drainage of the river. Budget: 7.070.000 pesetas.
The total investment reached 128.331.072 pesetas paid by the Port Authority, with help from RENFE that contributed with railway material, as well as technical help.
Other studied actions about the railway Now, the Port Authority is writing the studies of environmental impact and economic and technical viability for the continuation of the railway line to the Commercial and Ferrazo Quays, so all the installations can have this service, which is considered to be a priority for the future. |
